In San Fransico on Friday, a hostile crowd surrounded police officers as they arrested 34-year-old Marcus Khalant Ervin on charges of armed robbery in the Union Square neighborhood.
According to an SFPD report, officers had responded to an armed robbery near the 200 block of Ellis Street at Mason Street, when they saw a suspect matching the description given to them, running from the scene.
The suspect, police said, was wearing a balaclava when he jumped over a shop counter, showed his gun, and stole cash.
Officers were able to apprehend the man and found a loaded gun that he was carrying. At that time the crowd formed around the arresting officers, but they were able to move Ervin to a safe location.
Ervin was charged with robbery, possession of a concealed firearm, possession of a loaded firearm to commit a felony, possession of a concealed firearm in public, prohibited person to possess a firearm, convicted person in possession of a firearm, convicted person in possession of ammunition, exhibiting a deadly weapon, and resisting arrest.
46-year-old Hailia Hayes was also arrested after she said that she was with Ervin. She was charged with battery on a police officer, along with resisting arrest after she allegedly spat on an officer.
According to arrest records, Ervin has been arrested 11 times in surrounding areas since 2021, including for vehicular robbery, a hit and run that resulted in injury, and multiple charges of possessing a firearm and a controlled substance.
Ervin is being held without bond with a court date set for Jan. 10.
