On Friday, Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene said she was receiving reports that January 6 detainees were being moved out of DC jails, following a demand from congressional GOP that they be allowed to inspect the condition of the facilities, as reports of “abuse and neglect” had emerged.
“What is the DC Jail trying to hide by moving pretrial J6 defendants out of the jail before we go in?” Greene wrote on Twitter and retweeted American Greatness writer Julie Kelly reporting that “that some J6ers being moved out of DC Gulag in advance of GOP investigation into conditions there.”
In a letter from March 9, Republicans on the House Oversight Committee, including Greene and chair James Comer requested an inspection of the Department of Correctional facilities in DC where detainees charged with offenses related to January 6 were being held.
The letter was addressed to DC Democratic Mayor Muriel Bowers and contained accusations of abuse against those detained.
According to the letter, “Eyewitness accounts of conditions at the DC Jail Facilities — particularly regarding the treatment of January 6 detainees — paint a picture of despair, hopelessness, and a severe abuse of justice. No prisoner in the United States should be treated in this fashion.”
