Kaitlan Collins really wanted to know which nation Trump would prefer win the war between Ukraine and Zelensky. Trump, however, would prefer a win for humanity. “I want everybody to stop dying,” he said.
Trump has repeatedly promised to put an end to the war were he to win the 2024 election, saying that he would sit down with Zelensky and Putin and bring the violence to an end.
Collins asked Trump if he would continue giving US funds to Ukraine were he to win the presidency. Trump, who did deliver US funds to Ukraine while he was president, instead spoke of his relationship with Ukraine’s President Zelensky, which was amiable during his time in office.
“Would you give Ukraine weapons and funding if you were–” Collins asked, during one of the many moments when she interrupted Trump and spoke over him.
“If I’m president, I will have that war settled in one day, 24 hours,” he said.
“How would you settle that war in one day?” Collins asked, incredulous.
“They both have weaknesses and they both have strengths. And within 24 hours that will be settled. It’ll be over it’ll be absolutely,” he said.
“Do you want Ukraine to win this war?” She asked, trying to back him into a corner and declare allegiance for one foreign nation or another.
“I don’t think in terms of winning and losing,” Trump said, “I think in terms of getting it settled so we stop killing all these people…”
Trump was drowned out by applause, but then he was interrupted by Collins, who thought more of her targeted questioning than of listening for his answers.
“You don’t think in terms of of winning or losing?” She asked without waiting for a response. “Can I just follow up on that? Because that’s a really important.” She refused to allow him to answer that question, posing another instead. “Can you say if you want Ukraine or Russia to win this war?”
“I want everybody to stop dying,” Trump said unequivocally. “They’re dying Russians and Ukrainians. I want him to stop dying and I’ll have that done. I’ll have that done in 24 hours. I’ll have it done. You need the power of the presidency to do it.”
Collins interrupted again, trying to shame him for not choosing to name his preferred victor in a war for which he seeks peace. “But you won’t say if you want Russia or Ukraine to win?”
“You know what I’ll say? I’ll say this. I want Europe to put up more money because they’re in for $20 billion. We’re in for $170 [billion] and they should equalize. They have plenty of money. They should equalize,” he said. Collins tried to interject and make her points instead of listening to the man who had been invited on the stage to speak his mind.
“I got with NATO,” Trump continued. “When I sat down, I got them to put up to hundreds of billions of dollars that they weren’t paying under Obama and Bush and all of these other presidents. That’s why they’re able to help them fight the war because of the money I got, but I want Europe to put up more money, because they’re laughing at us, they think we’re a bunch of jerks. We’re spending $170 billion for faraway land, and they’re right next door to that land and their in for $20 [billion]. I don’t think so.”
