Federal Reserve Will Raise Interest Rates Nine Times: JP Morgan

The Federal Reserve is likely to raise interest rates nine times consecutively as policymakers attempt to rein in inflationary pressures, say economists at JP Morgan Chase.

The bank expects the Fed to raise interest rates by 25 basis points each of the nine times until March 2023, which would mean a total interest rate hike of 2.25 percent. By early next year, JP Morgan expects the Fed to take a neutral stance on the issue of interest rate, according to a research note, reported Bloomberg.

Since the January inflation reading “surprised materially to the upside,” the bank no longer expects inflation to decelerate from the last quarter’s “near-record pace.”

The Consumer Price index (CPI), a measure of inflation, rose 7.5 percent in January 2022 when compared to the same month last year, according to a Feb. 10 report by the U.S. Department of Labor. This is the fastest inflation increase since the 7.6 percent hike in February 1982.
