House Speaker Kevin McCarthy on Saturday promised to investigate New York City DA Alvin Bragg after Donald Trump announced that he anticipates an upcoming arrest on Tuesday over a Manhattan case that alleges he paid hush money to porn star Stormy Daniels in the lead up to the 2016 presidential election.
“Here we go again — an outrageous abuse of power by a radical DA who lets violent criminals walk as he pursues political vengeance against President Trump. I’m directing relevant committees to immediately investigate if federal funds are being used to subvert our democracy by interfering in elections with politically motivated prosecutions,” McCarthy tweeted.
Trump made the announcement on Truth Social and said, “Now illegal leaks from a corrupt & highly political manhattan district attorney’s office, which has allowed new records to be set in violent crime & whose leader is funded by George Soror, indicate that, with no crime being able to be proven, & based on an old & fully debunked (by numerous other prosecutors!) fairytale, the far & away leading Republican candidate & former President of the United States of America, will be arrested on Tuesday of next week. Protest, take our nation back!”
The case against Trump involves the accusation out of New York City DA Alvin Bragg’s office that Trump falsified business records and that his company accounted for $130,000 to be paid to Trump’s former lawyer Michael Cohen, who acted as a money passthrough to Stormy Daniels.
Trump has denied the charge which Bragg has elevated to the status of a felony, which means the NYC DA has attached an “intent to defraud” motive to the accusation.
