A recent poll by Gallup released on Monday shows a more than double-digit shift in party preferences at the US national level, shifting the balance in favor of the Republicans.
Gallup reports that, the last time they performed the same poll (in Q1 2021) the American public skewed nine percent in favor of the Democrats. This most recent poll, however, (in Q1 2021) shows that the Republicans are now favored by five percent.
Gallup: In 2021, Republicans went from a 9 point deficit in party identification to a 5 point lead.

“These results are based on aggregated data from all U.S. Gallup telephone surveys in 2021, which included interviews with more than 12,000 randomly sampled U.S. adults,” states Gallup’s website.
Respondents are asked if they identify as a Republican, a Democrat or an independent. If they respond that they are independents, they are then asked a follow-up question of whether they lean more towards one party or the other.
