Three men slashed at Queens subway station, suspect at large

A man slashed three men at the Jackson Heights subway station in Corona, Queens before fleeing the scene Sunday morning. The men are in stable condition and expected to survive. 

According to the New York Post, one victim was taken to New York Presbyterian Hospital for a cut on his arm, the other two were taken to Elmhurst Hospital Center; one had a cut on his neck and the other a slash on his head.

The police received a report of the stabbing around 5:30 am and rushed to the station located on Junction Boulevard and Roosevelt Ave. They said the suspect is around five-foot-nine and was wearing gray sweatpants, black shoes, but no shirt. He fled in an unknown direction after the altercation. 

Crime continues to be an issue on New York City subways. Former Marine Daniel Penny was recently charged with manslaughter after he put an unruly Jordan Neely in a submission hold, which led to his death. Witnesses said that Neely had been threatening fellow passengers when Penny and two others decided to subdue him. 

On April 18th, a panhandler slashed and robbed a 32-year-old man on a train as it approached the 103rd Street Harlem station in the early morning. Last July, a 14-year-old boy was stabbed to death on a subway platform. 

In a July 2022 survey, personal safety and security was the number one concern that people have while riding the subway, and 15 percent said they would ride more if there was a stronger police presence. 

These issues led Mayor Eric Adams to tell residents in October to put their phones away and be more vigilant amid the rising violent crime. He said, “I rode the subway yesterday, and it’s the same thing. I haven’t put my AirPods in for over a year because I feel like I need to be very much aware.”
